My Kids’ Daily Routine during the Summer Months

June 18, 2025 by GrowingConfident Leave a Comment

During the day, things don’t always go as smoothly as I would like but that is to be expected in a big family. In My Kids’ Daily Routine during the Summer Months, you may notice there is no set time for anything but meals and snacks that is because I like a routine over a schedule. It makes the day less stressful and also helps there to be breathing room if and when things go array. Think a temper tantrum, baby needing to be changed after spiting up, Dad coming home halfway through the day to say HI, etc. When we are done with one thing we just roll right into the next item on our list. This is My Kids’ Daily Routine during the Summer Months at Home, if we were going out obviously the day would unfold differently.

Morning Routine

Below are the things we try to get done in the morning. Sometimes we get it all completed, and other days items like schoolwork get pushed to the afternoon or after dinner when Dad is home to help.

730a Wake Up

Drink Chocolate Milk + Simple Breakfast of Muffins, Applesauce + Cereal.

Daily Chores

The little Boys pick up any toys that have been played with. Sometimes the Kids wake up and go straight to playing. Other times those who finish breakfast quickly will pull toys out and start playing until it is time for Daily Chores. Olivia wipes down the table, and Wyatt sweeps.

Everyone “makes” their bed and cleans up their bedroom. Our Boys share a room and since they are 6, 5, 4, and 2- years old I am not too strict with this since they are still learning. As long as they attempt then I am happy.

Get Dressed

I pick out the Boys’ clothes and help the Little Boys get dressed. Olivia picks out her own clothes, but I do help brush her hair. Help Little Boys with socks and shoes. Fill up the Kids’ Water Jug and my own Simple Modern 50 oz Mug Tumbler with Handle and Straw Lid. Load up Anderson and Micah in the Baby Trend Expedition Double Jogger Stroller while the older kids pick a few outside toys to bring.

Walk + Play Outside

Currently we live in an apartment, so we don’t have a backyard to play in. The kids and I will head out for a walk and end up in what we call our “play space”. This is an empty parking lot in back of the complex that we block off with orange safety cones, so the kids know the boundaries. If it is a rainy day, then our daily routine is changed up a bit and we play inside.

During this time, Olivia will complete Independent Work while the Boys play. She packs whatever schoolwork she is working on that day in her backpack and carries it with her on our walk. When she is finished then she joins the Boys in play. We also work on Nature Study while outside. While the Kids play, I read a few pages of the book we are working through which for now is Backpack Explorer: Bug Hunt: What Will You Find?

11a- ish Clean up Play Space and Walk Home for Lunch

I fix something quick like PB& J OR Homemade Lunchables. When everyone is done Olivia wipes down the table, and Wyatt sweeps again. Put Anderson down for a nap and work on Morning Time with the Older Kids. The Baby is either hanging out in his walker, crawling on the floor or also napping at this point.

Afternoon Routine

Afternoons seem to be the pain points in our daily routine for some reason. Sometimes that is due to Little Boys not napping or being woken up from the Older Boys before they are ready to be awake. I am still adjusting this portion of our day to figure out ways to make it run smoother.

Nap/Quiet Time

The Little Boys nap while the Older Kids read quickly and rest in their rooms.

2p Snack Time

I usually just fix what we have on hand. Maybe Apple Slices and Granola Bars. Make Smoothies. For a treat if everyone actually rested then Popcorn and a Cookie.

Summer Fun Activity

This means completing something from What My Kids Want to do This Summer.

Read Aloud

We are reading through The Good Dog Book Series at the moment.

TV Time

Only if everything for the day is complete. This gives me a few minutes to get dinner ready while the kids are distracted. Read our List of Clean + Age- Appropriate Television Shows for Kids for ideas of what our Kids watch.

530p Eat Dinner when Sam gets Home

When finished the Kids clean up their dishes themselves. Sam or I will help the Little Boys.

Evening Routine

Walk + Play Outside

Take an evening stroll and play in the “play space” again until about 7p. If it is raining, then we do a KiwiCo Crate OR watch a Movie if the Kids didn’t watch anything earlier.

7p-ish Bedtime Routine

The Kids will clean up. Take a bath, put lotion on my eczema Kid, Change into PJs, Brush Teeth, and a Bedtime Story of Little Pilgrim’s Big Journey Series. Once everyone is tucked in then the Boys listen to Adventures in Odyssey.

Olivia will read or play in her room until her Bedtime which should be 830p but sometimes time gets away from us.
