This is a guest post from my daughter, Olivia. In 2023 we promised her a kitten when we found out Baby #5 was to be yet another brother for her. Since getting her kitten she has done such an amazing job caring for her. We say ALL the time how we could not haven gotten a more perfect pet! Her kitten is so patient and friendly with our rowdy boys and loyal like no one’s business to Olivia. Keep reading to find out her tips for kids on caring for a new kitten.

Hi Friends, it’s Olivia. I’m going to tell you about my pet cat, Cupcake. I love Cupcake but Cupcake can be very naughty sometimes. She eats plants. Climbs on the counter to lick the faucet. Leaves bugs she kills on the floor for me to clean up. She hates dogs.
Cupcake loves cat treats. Tuna and chicken flavored treats. Chicken and veggie flavored treats. She loves slurpy creamy treats or dry square treats. Cupcake loves following me when I have treats in my hand. She loves her food and water. She always cuddles with me because I am her Mama. I try teaching her tricks and sometimes she even obeys them. I have taught her to sit with me and gives me hugs! She loves to chase beads around the floor.
Preparing for a New Kitten
Some items I think you need to buy before getting your new kitten are…
- Toys. They loooove to play!
- Litterbox and Litter
- Litter Scoop. To clean out the litterbox. It can get smelly if you don’t clean it every few days!
- Cat Food
- Food and Water Bowls
- Cat Treats
- Cat Bed OR Blanket
- Cat Tree. This is the Cat Tree with Cat Condo from Amazon that Cupcake has. She likes to sleep at the top.
- Brush to use for brushing your cat’s fur.
Your First Few Days with a New Kitten
When kittens meow, they may feel hungry, cold, or maybe they just want to play. If your kitten hisses it means she is angry and does not want to play. Your kitten may be scared when you first bring her home. Give her space to explore and smell everything. Talk kindly to her and let her know you love her.
Each day remember to check your kitten’s food and water in case they need more. Some people think that kittens can drink milk from the grocery store, but this can hurt a kitten’s stomach. When kittens are a few weeks old, they can start eating moist kitten food.
Remember one of your most important jobs as your kitten’s new parent is to give her a name! I named my pet cat Cupcake Rainbow!
Additional Thoughts
Keep plants away from cats because cats will chew on them. This can make them sick and throw up!
